a day in the life of the farmer: the wheat harvest

I've been missing in action from the blogosphere all week and I've been scolding myself about it. It seems like my success at posting regular posts comes in cycles and this week was an off week. I promise I'm trying to get better about posting more regularly, so stay tuned..

This week was a little monotonous..
We are still enduring very, VERY dry weather.
This week the temps decided to break some records and get comfortable above 100 degrees.
Chris & I attempted to harvest wheat on 3 separate occasions, but the moisture content of the seed was just a few points too high (grain buyers like the moisture to be around 13-13.5% moisture and ours was at 18-18.5 the first few days we tried to harvest it).
So of course, yesterday, the day I decide to go swimming with my "second mama", my friend Samantha's mom, Sue, the wheat was fit to harvest and Chris combined it all with out me :(
Anyways, I  realized that quite a bit of my readers do not live on farms and, more than likely, have never seen a combine in action. So, I decided to shoot a short little video of what that looks like. Its my way of bringing a little bit of agriculture into your lives.

So there it is.. The view from the inside of the combine. That noise you hear in the background is my husband's second love, behind me, AM sports radio. I swear I'm transported back to driving around the driver's ed car with the high school football coach every time Chris has it on, which is a lot. That day he was listening to the Chicago White Sox game, which I will take any day over the usual radio-personality-arguing-with-callers crap.. It just seriously stresses me out to listen to arguing. I don't know how Chris does it!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I get to read about it next week :)

  1. I grew up hanging out on my grandparents farm, but this is something I never got to do. I love that you know how to drive a combine. Go girl!
