Happy 53rd Birthday, Dad

Yesterday was my dad's 53rd birthday.
I swear, ever since he turned 50 it seems like the his age is going up soooooo slowly. Its like he's been in his early 50's for like 10 years. Of course I know this isn't true :) Me, on the other hand, it seems like my years have been rapidly speeding by. Ahhh, such is life, right?
Anywho, I made dad a double layer chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and put it on my pretty milk glass pedestal cake stand (the one I planned on using for my modest, tiny wedding cake but didn't get to because the cake lady bullied me into a monster of a cake).
Dad always made us chocolate cake with the homemade chocolate frosting recipe off the back of the Hershey's unsweetened chocolate box. If you've never had it, you really must try it. Its a cinch to make and I promise, if you like chocolate, you will never go back to store bought frosting again.
Its just so bold and kinda rich without being overwhelmingly sweet. Plus it tastes real and doesn't leave that nasty crisco-like film on the top of your mouth like frosting from a can does. Instead of buying a box mix for the cake I decided to give a go to the recipe for "perfectly chocolate cake" on the back of the Hershey's box. Also super easy and super delish..
Try it already..

We took dad to the Prime Quarter in Princeton for grill-your-own steaks and all the extras.
Besides the grill being melt-your-face-off hot, it was a good time.
my bro, dad, and Crystal
Dinner conversation included us discussing restaurant eating contests (the prime quarter has a steak called the beefeater.. its 40 oz.. you get a medal if you finish it). Dad reminisced on how much he used to be able to put away at the dinner table and how it's changed with age.. as he looked down at his half eaten filet.. Oh, the joys of getting older, right? I love food way too much to be okay with that..
All in all, it was a great time..  I'd say that dad had a pretty good birthday..
besides the fact that Chris and I didn't have birthday candles and I had to stick unlit matches in his cake.
Chris tried to light them all but just when he'd get one lit, the energy of the next one lighting would put out the one he'd just lit. So dad blew out three "candles".
He didn't seem to mind once he tasted the cake.
